A new ****punk....
Dec. 4th, 2008 01:58 amLooks like we have another punked style. OK, first we had plain old Punk which I think pretty much is where this got started. Cyberpunk had to do with dystopian, dark.. future stuff. One of the first Cyberpunk shows was Max Headroom which had quite a bit of punk influence in it. But mostly when I think of cyberpunk I think of styles such as Blade Runner, The Matrix, Ghost In The Shell, etc.
We got dieselpunk which started with things such as Mad Max. There are other examples in that genre but I am not familiar off the top of my head. There's of course Steampunk... we've been seeing a lot of modifications of products in this genre. Movies that spring to mind are Steamboy (an anime film), and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Steampunk focuses on taking current\future technology and making it seem like it was created in the 1800's.
Well... now we have a new type to add to this list. Atompunk.... this deals with the style that was created in the 40's\50's\60's when we where in the space race. A lot of things in the Men In Black movies are from this era such as the tables and chairs in the men in black headquarters. A lot of Science Fiction came from this era... the robots from Lost in Space are representative of this era. The Jetsons are from this era... even 2001: A Space Odyssey is a part of this... and I love the style of that movie... especially aboard the space station with the pink chairs.
It's actually pretty appealing to me... and to be honest designs from the space age era fit in with my decor more than steampunk. Not that I'm saying suddenly I don't like that anymore. Just that this may actually work for me more than that. If this truly is becoming a movement I look forward to the mods that are going to be coming out.
Which brings me to something that I have noticed recently. A lot of what is popular and considered modern nowadays are actually retro. Stuff such as the Barcelona Chair which was designed during the Bauhaus movement in 1929. Reproductions are being sold now by companies like Design Within Reach as modern decor.
