I was on an image board recently (which shall go nameless) looking through their wallpaper section. There was a comment that bugged me.. not enough to make me want to take the person on but enough for me to make a comment here. The person said that 1024x768 is the perfect resolution for wallpapers since "most" people use it and it can be scaled to whatever higher resolution without losing quality. This person said that most people who run higher resolutions do it to look "l33t" to their internet friends and do it despite them hurting their eyes. All of that is a load if I ever heard one.
First of all it may be true that a lot of people might be using 1024x768 but it's hardly the best resolution for wallpapers. Some things might look OK when saved at that resolution and then scaled up to larger resolutions but it still looks fuzzy and not nearly as sharp as something made real big and then scaled down to whatever you use. I personally hate it when people distribute wallpapers at 1024x768 or below because when they do that the resolution that the wallpaper originally had was destroyed when they saved it especially when they save it as jpg. There actually is no sweet spot as monitors are coming out that are bigger and bigger all the time but I always like it when they come out with walls that are around 1600x1200.
Part of what brings a friend of mine's desktop down when it comes to looks is he often uses lower resolution pictures than his desktop size and scales them up... sometimes I choose lower resolution pics too but often times when I do that I edit the pictures to increase the canvas size but keep the subject at the same size so it doesn't have to be stretched.
Second of all not everyone who runs high res uses a 14 inch monitor and are masochists. I use 1024x768 on my laptop with its 14 inch monitor because it's the native resolution of the monitor. The native resolution of my Mac's monitor is 1280x1024 so I use that there. Native resolution is the best resolution to use on flat panels and I experience no eye strain from doing so.
Another person said they see no reason to have a gigantic screen. Maybe they have no reason to use a gigantic screen but personally I do. Especially when I am working with graphics or heck.. I find use for all the space I have on my 1280x1024 desktop and more.
No I'm not really taking those people's comments to heart but I just wanted to say something about it here. I respect other people's choices\preferences but I have my own after all. I just sort of hate it when people try to foist theirs on me. I've had quite a bit of walls that are 1024x768 or below on my mac but I'm cleaning them out and only keeping the highest resolution especially since in the future I might get a bigger better monitor.
At one time I actually agreed with them about using that particular resolution and scaling it but not anymore. When it comes to wallpapers the bigger the better.. especially considering the wide range of sizes of monitors out there.
