In particular I noticed the reissue of this game that goes with Alice Madness Returns isn't just a straight port. Apart from the apparent new gamepad support it has they also re-skinned many of the main characters to have higher resolution skins (and possibly detail texutres if you look closely at some of them like alice's).

These skins are actually applicable\back-portable to the old PC\Mac versions if you drop the new pak5_mod.pk3 file into your old Alice install folder's base folder. A PK3 is basically a zip file renamed to pk3 instead of zip. However some of the folder names are different making the game ignore the new skins as they are looking for them elsewhere so you either you either need to change them to match the original folder structure in the mod pk3 or copy the skins .ftx over to the appropriate folders in the original pak1_large.pk3 using your favorite archive utility and then save them..

The only thing is they didn't go whole hog with the reskinning and basically only did the main characters.. lots of props and junk that needed re-skinning badly still aren't done. They would need someone in the community to convert the .ftx files to .tga using the utility floating around and update it yourself. I have been thinking of doing this for quite some time now and actually started work on some high res textures... anyway here's some screenshots of the new skins when applied to the old version like Aspyr's version for the Mac.

Here are some example screenshots of the new skins for the original Alice (click to see full size):
  • Alice:

  • Card Guard and Alice:

  • Cheshire Cat:

  • Card Guards and Alice:

  • Chesire Cat and Alice:

  • White Rabbit:

I think they where inspired by neco z alenky for the new color of his coat... like in this pic of the white rabbit from that movie:

  • Centipede:

the pak5_mod.pk3 file contains new skins for the following and what you need to do to fix the folders in the new pk3 file so they show up:

Alice

Boojum

CardGuard (they are supposed to not be in a subfolder rather they are supposed to have each separate card guard skin in their own folders in the character folder) (the bullets denote subfolders) e.g.
Characters
  • cardguard_club

  • cardguard_diamond

  • cardguard_heart

  • cardguard_spade

Instead of how they have it which is
Characters
  • cardguard

and then the above subfolders under the cardguard subfolder.

Centipede

Cheshire_Cat (folder is supposed to be just named Cheshire)

MockTurtle (typoed as MorckTurtle in the PK3)

Spider

TweedleDee

TweedleDum

WhiteRabbit

So again basically what you have to do to fix it is:

  1. Cheshire (rename the folder in the pak5_mod file from Cheshire_Cat to just Cheshire)

  2. Card Guards (move their folders out of the card guard folder into the parent (characters) folder so they reside amongst the others)

  3. Mock Turtle (remove the R in MorckTurtle making it MockTurtle)

Your pak3 folder structure should look like this when done:

It goes without saying but I hope the new alice gets ported to the mac and also the reissue wouldn't be bad either even considering you can use the new skins from it with the old mac version since it now has gamepad support and some people on mac would probably like to play it with a gamepad (not me but I'm sure some).

It also has fixes for the HUD which you can see above messes up in the old version when set to a widescreen resolution.
