Gender and Math Skills...
Jun. 3rd, 2008 02:19 amI was looking around the news sites for interesting things and I found this.
"It's widely recognized that, in the US at least, there's a gender gap in performance on tests of basic skills: boys tend to perform better at math, while girls get superior reading scores."
On the one hand at least they are saying it's not because of biological differences. But it is unfortunate that they also seem to think it's because of how differently the genders are treated. However, all that aside in my experience it always seemed to me that generally school always came easier to females than to males and they generally where more studious and had better hand writing. I know of plenty of females who are better at math than I am. Tons who have better hand writing than me... and probably lots more who write better than I do. I myself generally tended to score a lot better in most things other than math. When I took the ACT's prior to getting into The Art Center Design College I scored high in most things except that.
So as with all generalizations I don't think this applies to all people.
Someone commented,
"I think it has a LOT to do with the gender of the teachers. Girls learn better from female teachers and boys learn better from male teachers."
Eh, I don't know about that. I've had plenty of teachers I didn't learn much from who where male and plenty of female teachers I learned lots from who where female. All my favorite teachers where female.
One last thing and kind of off topic.. those chibi justice league flash cards are cute! I probably would have studied my multiplication tables more if I had them.. or maybe not. But I would have loved to have those.
