Yesterday my DSL equipment came in. I spent most of the afternoon setting it up. If you have an existing router it's not as plug and play as a cable or a satellite modem. We ordered the self install kit so I was of course the one who had to install it.

For the longest time I used to think that DSL required a special line to be run to your house in order to work. Maybe at one time it did. It's working over our already existing phone wiring in our house though. The kit came with four phone filters which I only have used two so far as we have two phone systems with two handsets each which makes it technically only two phones.

There was only one problem with my DSL modem. It turns out the ones who made it also decided to include a one port router\NAT inside the modem. My router already has that stuff so the one in the modem is redundant and it causes issues with trying to setup incoming connections.

I noticed however that I had inadvertently setup my Qwest DSL with MSN as the ISP. I read that you have to be signed up direct with the phone company not through MSN to be able to switch options in the modem so it'll just be a modem. So I called up Qwest and asked to switch. It wasn't too hard and they told me it'll be 7 dollars less just going through them. That's like a win win situation for me. It'll be the 19th when we get switched over however.

It's kind of ironic to me how we now have DSL but we don't have paved streets.

The reasons why this is better than my previous ISP?

  • Lower Latency: I can do things like VOIP or games now.
  • Faster Uploads
  • No 17GB a month bandwidth cap
  • Cheaper (no more $80 a month)

The modem being smaller and nicer looking doesn't hurt either.

I've packed up my satellite modem into the box it came in. I just need someone to de-install the dish on the roof and I can sell the equipment maybe at the wild blue uncensored forum.
