Mac clone?
Apr. 14th, 2008 10:36 pmThe biggest glaring holes in Apple's lineup is a mid-range tower with a dedicated graphics card. Also the least expensive Mac is around $600. Enter Pystar with their hackintosh that they apparently are looking to sell. I understand the reasons why people say Apple doesn't license OS X or allow clones. But I'm pretty sure there is enough demand for a mid-range Mac tower out there. The case on the Pystar hackintosh doesn't look too shabby either. It's not totally Mac but I think it looks better than most PCs out there.
Notice that the EULA says "Apple-labeled" that can possibly be remedied by slapping an Apple sticker or laser etching an Apple logo on there. ;) or maybe not but it almost sounds like that.
To be honest with you the only thing that even makes me consider something like this is because again Apple's current lineup has a glaring hole in it. I like the look\feel of the new Macs (especially the MacBook Air and new iMac) but besides being dirt poor them not keeping up with the joneses in the graphics card front doesn't make me long for upgrading as much. The 8800GT shouldn't be only obtainable in a $3k system.
If that pystar system allows you to slap in a video card into a PCI Express slot (8800GT in this case since it's supported in OS X now) and it's not a pain to put OS X on there and maintain it it's awfully tempting.
I noticed the highest you can get on the pystar in graphics cards is the 8600GT I wonder why they don't offer the 8800GT? Does it not work with the hardware?
It may not be good for them to offer OS X preinstalled.
Also one more concern about this is it's probably not on the up and up so you may be left high and dry if\when the sh..tuff hits the fan. Also at insanely mac they don't seem to he happy about them profiting off their work and sending people their way for support. Hmmm....
I just like the idea of a more affordable Mac with decent video cards. But I'm not going to put up with a potentially shady company and OS upgrade headaches to do so.
