smoketetsuo: (Kat Ranger at Computer)
Most people would probably consider Mac OS X to be a pretty secure OS to start off with but it still could use some help. Such as.. when you first setup your mac you setup an account but that account is allowed to administer the computer. Despite what some people might think you don't need to be running as an administrator account all the time in fact it's better if you didn't.

So what I have done on my mac is I keep an administrator account and then a separate user account that has "allow this account to administer the computer" unchecked. When you need to install a program you do the normal procedure then you click authenticate and type in your admin account name and password.

Since I had been using my admin account for a while I had to transfer some of the things in my home directory to the new account and fast user switching came in handy for that job. I had to give my admin account permission to modify my regular user accounts home directory though.

I do a similar thing when I'm on the PC... but I'll leave the info for that for another time.
