One of my favorite PC games from the late 90's was Duke Nukem 3D. A few years back 3D Realms the developers of it released the source code so hobbyists could convert it to different systems and add enhancements. Some of the conversions in particular the first one that came out for the Mac where basic no frills conversions with no extra enhancements.

There are two versions for Windows that do have enhancements namely graphics card support for filtering the graphics so they don't look blocky and the possibility to replace the graphics with more detailed graphics... The Duke3D High Res Pack is a result of this.

The first conversion that also had improvements was jfDuke3D. The author of that version has been saying that he has been working on a Mac version for years and for years I have been patiently awaiting for it to come out to no avail. He has teased and hinted at it showing off a small screenshot of some setup windows every once in a while but there hasn't been a new release for even Windows since 2005.

Meanwhile there was also another version for Windows called eDuke32 which is a fork of jfDuke3D that has been more publicly maintained with a lot more releases and updates so that the High Res Pack authors can add more features to that pack such as detail textures so you can see the grain of the wood clearly when you get up close to something made of wood for example.

Well, someone decided to take this version and make a version for Mac OS X these past couple of months. I've just barely noticed it tonight because I was mostly just checking the jfDuke3D forum for activity. Today on a whim I googled "eDuke32 OS X" and the page of the author doing the work was the first hit. It was a very pleasant surprise that this version exists and not only that but it supports PowerPC processors as well as intel. Some of the new games and software coming out now no matter how demanding they are are intel only.

The PowerPC build is kind of buggy. The sound effects don't work and it seems to crash sometimes... particularly when the midi song has to loop.... the web site seems to say that it also has a bug loading high res textures while full screen. But this is a great start and I look forward to more revisions from this person.

Here's a screenshot of it running in a window on my desktop. No high res pack or anything just Duke3D running with OpenGL to see how well it would run.

[eDuke32 OS X] : Here's the link to the Mac version once more in case you missed it.
