Aspyr and Digital Distribution....
Sep. 26th, 2008 05:05 pmI'm sorry but Aspyr has been disappointing to me lately. First of all they are the premiere company for bringing over PC (and console) games to the Mac. Yet this year I don't even need one hand to count how many games much less AAA titles they have brought to the Mac. The last game I procured from them and enjoyed the hell out of was Prey and that was a 2006 game. I'm sure they dissapointed a lot of people when they ported Guitar Hero III to the PC and Mac and it had lots of performance problems on even the best computers.
Well, add this to the list of disappointments. For the past couple of years they have been teasing a digital distribution platform that they where making. So I had been imagining all along that it would be something along the lines of Steam and that on launch day they'd have a cornacopia of titles such as their backlog of games they have ported.
So they have opened their online game store "Game Agent" besides only having one Mac game available so far (CoD4 at $54.99) there's also this (from TUAW):
You can only download the game once to one computer and if you need to download it again you have to cough up an extra $5... not to mention the serial code restriction and you can only keep it 2 years before paying extra. I wrote this as a comment there:
I was excited when I first saw that they finally brought this out. I have been waiting for this for years now. But then I too was disappointed to read about the limitations. Even macgamestore.com is sounding better right about now.
So in conclusion: Game Agent = Epic Fail!
I suggest you make some changes Aspyr. I'll be waiting.

One downside is that the game is locked to your computer, so you can only play them on the machine they were downloaded on. If you want to re-download the games on a new computer, you must purchase the EDS service when you buy the game. Even then, a given serial number can only be activated three times.
