I was checking out the forum for The GIMP "gimper.net" and I found a thread (under the "Wilber Loves Apple" sub-forum) that shows screenshots of the upcoming native GIMP port for OS X. Not only will this version not require X11 and use the native menubar but they've got it using native system resources as well! It'll be great once this version is out. Here's a few screenshots:

Check them out inside.... )

The native theme engine could still use some tweaking but it's already looking great. The screenshots where taken in Tiger. Of course if you run it in Leopard or with a different theme in Tiger it will look different. I think it already looks better than the GTK-WIMP theme in Windows. The widgets look more integrated (wrapping the actual control rather than the pixmap) with OS X than how they do it in Windows which just looks like they grab the system theme and chop it up into the GTK widgets. GTK-WIMP doesn't apply non-default themes like Aqua correctly in Windows. With GTK +Quartz I'm half expecting the buttons and scrollbars to behave like real OS X buttons and scrollbars. Don't get me wrong.. I think they did a good job on GTK-WIMP. This just looks like it might be even better than that.

The only program I run through the X11 Application in OS X is The GIMP and with this in the works its days are numbered. They need to update this page with a full screenshot of the current build with the integrated menubar and theme engine. To be honest with you I'm not interested in any other GTK+ Application other than The GIMP.

By the way, if you have an Intel Mac there is an experimental build of the native X11-Free GIMP here. I don't know if it includes the new theme engine (I'm guessing it may not) or whether it requires Tiger or Leopard. That page is where I used to get my builds of The GIMP before Wilber Loves Apple took over for the most part.
