I recently ordered myself a Super Smartjoy (for 12 dollars plus shipping off of ebay) controller adaptor that adapts Super Nintendo controllers to USB for use on PC\Mac so I could use my old Fighter Stick SN
[another picture] again and it works like a charm. I was always better with that fighter stick playing SNES and Arcade games than I was with a gamepad.

I used to use it all the time on my Super Nintendo which I have since lost from all the moves I have done. But I still have the stick and it works great with SNES9x, MAME and even Genesis Plus. I've used it to play the SNES KI and the original (and much better) arcade version and which is something I never thought I'd be able to do. Same thing with the original arcade versions of the Mortal Kombat games. Back when I first got this joystick I didn't think I'd ever use it to play the real versions of those games.

I notice that I'm even better playing NES games with it. Probably because I have a lot of practice playing platformer games with it on the SNES. Although it's pretty much only with old 2D or fighting\arcade games that I'd use this stick with. For games like Mario 64 or other games that make use of an analog stick I'd still use a gamepad with analog sticks and for first person shooters and third person shooters I would still use keyboard and mouse. Those respectively are the best tools for the job in my opinion.

There's one thing though the buttons are mapped weird in my opinion it's not how I would think it would be the buttons are like this:

X Y is 1 and 4
B A is 3 and 2

and L R is 7 and 8

and start is 6 and select is 5

I thought B and A would be 2 and 1
X and Y would be 3 and 4
L and R would be 5 and 6
and start and select would be 7 and 8

But it's not really that big a deal once you get it mapped in the emulators.. especially SNES9x.

One cool thing about games on the computer is how the community makes mods for them some of those mods called "TC" or total conversions are whole new games (usually free) made using a commercial game as its engine. The only problem is sometimes TCs are more than the average indie developer to chew and a lot of them don't get released but when they do it's pretty cool. There are also now indie games that are standalone games because certain companies have released the source code to their older engines.

Today I was seeing that the MOD DB has a top mods of the year awards for 2007 released and here's but a couple that have caught my eye:

The Real World: This is a mod for one of my favorite games "Max Payne" which makes it into a Matrix game. It's kind of like well there is already Path of Neo but it'd be interesting to see another developers take and unlike that game this game might possibly be able to be played on the Mac because it's a TC for Max Payne which has a Mac version out.

The official site for it is here and you can see a lot of nice screenshots there.

This indie game "Zombie Crisis" is interesting in an old school kind of way. I'm assuming it uses eDuke32 for its engine. I would use texture filtering if that's the case I prefer that over the alternative any day.

I'm not the biggest Stargate fan out there but this looks interesting to me. It reminds me of the episode where Teal'c gets put into a VR game and they had scenes that looks just like a game.

There are plenty of other mods, TCs and indie games there and at other sites too if you take a look. Half-Life 2 is especially getting a lot of good TCs\Mods.
