Tech Stuff...

Lately I have been noticing that certain services that have usage caps on them are starting to offer faster speeds. I kind of question the use of offering higher speeds when you can only download so much a month or in some cases like hughesnet a day.

"Mostly what having faster speeds on those services helps you do is hit your usage cap faster and violate their "fair usage policies". It's like they are saying, "We have to limit how much you download a month. Here, let us help you get punished faster!"

In addition to that their newer faster plans cost hundreds of dollars a month; Literally. If you are in an area where faster comcast docsis 3.0. They also have upgraded their current "Performance" and "Performance Plus" services to 12 and 16 Mbps. Especially there I say it mostly helps you hit your cap faster.

A better alternative if you live in those highly served areas is fiber optics to the premises such as verizon FiOS or Qwest Fiber Optic or something equivalent which I would say is the better choice. They are less expensive and don't have caps. In fact even most DSL services are sounding better right about now as most in the states don't impose caps... at least not yet.

On the sattelite side of things hughesnet is offering 5Mbps internet at $349.99 a month and for that much you have to keep your daily downloads under 500MB. Wildblue still hasn't updated their site and still offers 1.5Mbps down\256k up for $80 a month and a monthly rolling cap of 17GB downloads and 5GB uploads.

Personally if I could get fiber optic internet I would. The best I can get in my location at the moment is 1.5Mbps\800k DSL for around $30 a month (no monthly cap). I would like to have faster but again it's a hell of a lot better than expensive and restrictive satellite... and since Comcast wont service my area they aren't even a contender even if I wanted them. If\when I move into town I will probably choose either faster DSL or fiber if it's offered. The thing about the speed of my connection is it isn't fast enough to stream high quality videos over the net. I have to view them in "basic" quality.
