Quick Thoughs On WWDC...

Quick because I don't have the energy to go into a lengthy post about it.

iPhone 3G: Eh, cool. Lots of new features in the new firmware (especially for those of you who use the iPhone with MS products). Shiny black or white phones. Ironic that they cost less than the iPod Touch now you can get a 16GB iPhone for the same price as a 8GB iPod Touch and a 16GB one for $100 more. Too bad I wont ever be able to get any of them. I can't even get a Nintendo DS or a Gameboy Advance SP.

There's one caveat though.. I think it's kind of lame that they have decided not to allow background processes from third party apps. There are certain applications where I would like for them to be able to run in the background like Skype and IM. Their solution of push notifications sounds lame too because it requires an always on connection. This wont be ideal for apps that don't use the internet connection and shouldn't need it.

Mobile Me: Sounds too much like Windows Me and is basically just .mac revised.

Snow Leopard: Potentially cool.. it's mostly going to be an optimized and polished regular Leopard. Yeah it's official.. Snow Leopard is the name. Probably to illustrate how it's not that big a change over Leopard. I hope it's cheap that's all I gotta say about that.

April Fools...

A problem with days like today is that it's hard to take certain news stories seriously. Especially when you know the history of certain companies or subjects. For example... at TUAW they posted an article that was discovered on TRMK about Mortal Kombat possibly coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch. I commented:

"Right now I doubt this is real especially considering what day it is. But even if it is I doubt controlling the characters via motion control like that would make it nearly as easy to control as with a gamepad or fighting joystick. With the latter being my preferred method to control fighting games such as this. This is especially true if you are trying to do a combo move that starts with the character jumping diagonally and then you have to double tap a direction and then press a button to do a special move. Then imagine the moves where you have to hold down a button, do a tapping motion on a movement and then press a button. To be honest, playing it on MAME on a Mac (especially with the right control) is a lot better.. hell, even playing one of the many console versions or on the Nintendo DS would be better." (BTW, you can replace Mac with PC in my comment if that's your persuasion.. it's just that I was posting on a Mac centric site so I said Mac.)

Then of course the creators of Mortal Kombat have on purpose leaked rumors just to stir up interest in the past. Then fans have also made up rumors and hoaxes such as screenshots of fake character and other junk and sent them to places like gaming magazines just for their two seconds of fame. This isn't the first time they would have made up a fake version for the internet anyway... I don't remember exactly how it went but they have done something similar before.

I'm just putting a skeptical mind on this for now.

I got to try the iPhone today...

I stopped by the Apple store with my family this (Tuesday) afternoon and of course they had a few iPhones setup to demonstrate. In general it seems to work pretty good. Some things weren't as fast as I thought they would be though like when you change the orientation of the phone from landscape to portrait. The thing that worked the best was the coverflow in the "iPod" mode. It "scrolls like butter". I love the way the touch screen works.. my mom commented that it looked pretty easy to use from watching me play with it. Youtube also looked pretty good there. I would kind of go so far as to say that youtube looks better there than anywhere else.

I didn't get to try the keyboard function of the screen since the phone's web browser wasn't connecting to the web for some reason. But in general I do like the phone.. however I can't overlook how expensive it is and how it only has 8GB of storage which has to be shared between all the things you would do on it so you can't just load up 8GB of one thing like music or videos. So I can't just sync it up with my Mac and be done because I have lots more than just 8GB of music alone.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.. there are two major things that I would like to see added and that is upping the storage amount to at least as much as the iPod videos and integrated Skype functionality. Or at least iChat with Audio chat support for when you are on Wi-Fi.

Lowering the price wouldn't hurt either. =P

It was kind of amusing hearing a sales person talking to a person next to me about the iPhone... he was simply regurgitating the same stuff you hear on the commercials VERY enthusiastically. I guess it may be good that I don't have that job because I don't know how long I would be able to keep that up.

Trillian for iPhone........

I saw the news about this today. It looks like they are making a version of the web version of Trillian called "Astra" for the iPhone. The screenshot they have so far looks pretty good although I hope they put in Buddy Icon ability. Also I would like it if you hit the home button that it could remain open in the background. You can't get instant messaging on the iPhone otherwise and this gives you multi-protocol instant messaging. This actually makes a bit more sense to me than running Astra on a regular desktop computer web browser. On that kind of system I'd rather run a native multi-protocol instant messaging client. On iPhone though there is no one and it looks like Trillian Astra integrates better on there taking on the look and feel of the iPhone.

Stop.. Meizu Time...

If you have been following my journal for a while you would see that I have featured Meizu's stuff before. Meizu for those of you who don't know is a chinese MP3 player manufacturer. They made this nice looking playerthat I wouldn't mind having. Well.. they are now taking aim at the iPhone with their Meizu MiniOne iPhone style mobile phone. One nice thing so far is it has 16GB of storage which is twice as much as the bigger iPhone. Only thing is... even though nothing has been finalized importers are already pricing it at $988USD! That's even more ridiculous than the iPhone's price considering this may not even have all the same features working as good (multitouch anyone?). But it does have other features the iPhone lacks (like video chat it has a camera on the front so you can do that) a higher resolution screen and more chance for third party software. There's already skype for it (Windows Mobile).

*Edit* I had forgotten the link to the article... it's included now.
