Microsoft's New Advertisements...
Sep. 19th, 2008 01:34 pmLately Microsoft has been coming out with advertisements in response to Apple's "I'm a Mac" commercials. In an article at Neowin they say reaction to the gates\seinfeld commercials are mixed:
"Some industry analysts have said that Microsoft was basically throwing away their money and that the company should be directly attacking Apple and the Mac."
Their new commercial that has been recently released is basically to counter the portrayal of PC in the Mac commercials. That's OK although some have pointed out that it's not specific enough, PC? What kind of PC? A PC could be many systems running many operating systems. But here's the thing. Is Microsoft hurting so much that they would need to attack Apple directly? It's almost like they are saying, 90+% of the market? That's a travesty... we are failing! We can't let Apple or other operating systems get even one or two more points!"
It's like some bloated obese kid getting upset because their skinnier smaller friend got a few more morsels of food they don't usually get and they are getting a tiny bit less food. Yet they are still eating the bulk of it and are still getting bigger. And people think this is cool? If there's any doubt Microsoft is anticompetitive there shouldn't be any now. They want to be a complete and total monopoly and stamp out all competition.
To be fair some of the Apple ads are pretty misleading. I never would have put it past them to do that either. They've made a career out of it. However this is almost like bad sport bully tactics in my opinion. It's almost as if Microsoft thinks they are playing a zero sum game where no one else must have even a smidgin of success if it means one less Microsoft software user. I'm sorry but this has hurt, not helped their image in my eyes. At least the gates\seinfeld ads where a somewhat amusing diversion.
Obviously though I'm not the target of their ads. Ads like those are for those people sitting on the fence. But again with them dominating most of the market does it really make them heros to try to snatch back the few market share points they have lost to Apple and other operating systems? Not in my eyes. Again it's like a fat kid kicking his skinny friend in the nuts and taking his sandwich.
When I use Windows it will be despite not because of these advertisements. Same thing could be said about the Apple ads too though. I got my Mac before they started that Campaign.
I can't believe we've gotten to the point where people are actually cheering on Microsoft to dominate. What happened to the attitudes people used to have when they where being taken to court for being a monopoly? Did they forget about all that? Remember... M$? Come on, Microsoft has most of the market still!
