[Error: unknown template qotd]Unless something drastically changes in games that alienates a lot of people I feel that games will more likely get more popular as years go by. Especially as graphics and game plot gets better and more developed. It's a foregone conclusion that there'll eventually be mainstream games that are photorealistic. Some games today almost get there already especially in high resolutions with settings like antialiasing and such on.
In my opinion games have come a long way to catch up with film and will only continue to do so in the future. I can almost imagine a future where games have supplanted movies where those who like to play will play which then generates a movie for those who don't like to play but want to watch it for the plot. People have already begun this with stuff like machinima after all.
Right now games and movies are still best separate because most movies based on games are not well received or regarded and vice versa but this'll probably change in the future and we already have some well made adaptations into games like Batman Arkham Asylum. Also movie studios like The Weinstein Company have formed game studios and game studios like Ubisoft have purchased a movie studio. We also have an upcoming expansion pack for Call of Duty that's a zombie game with movie star power behind it.
That's not to say it needs cross pollination with movies to get to where it's going it's also doing fine on it's own. Games like Assassin's Creed series are pretty cinematic in their own right and don't need much in the way of hollywood influence.
Also games tend to be not suited for large audiences in a theater setting like a movie is and are best played with each person having their own screen and controls. So they'll probably always be a different format but like I mentioned before I can imagine there being a movie that is generated by a game and each player has a part kind of like in a play. That way both types of audiences get their preferred form of entertainment. This would especially be good if that game allowed the players to craft their own plot making the game sort of like theatre. Hardware like Kinect could be implemented so that it can capture facial expressions of the players and map them to the characters in the game helping convey their performance in real time.
There's already a studio making animation software using the Unreal Engine 3 that allows the users of it to focus more on things other than programming. This is a step in that direction.
