Hmmmm...

This just isn't right Is it just me or is this a tad.... excessive? While I myself am not for promiscuity the teen in question here did not deserve to get 10 years in jail for a BJ with what is essentially his peer. He is also going to be branded a sex offender for life to top that off! There are better ways to deal with things like this than to ruin a kids life. I mean... really! All this because parents view their daughters under 18 as "little angels who need to be protected" when a lot of them (no offense) are no angel. It may be true that some may be coerced into situations they may not be ready for but this is isn't always true and should be treated on a case by case manner... especially when they are around the same age. This also shows a double standard where if the guy was 15 and she was 17 they probably would still give him 10 years because he is the guy. Either that or they would just congratulate him. =p

*update* Not only did the girl go down on the guy in question here but 5 other guys practically one after the other. It was consenual too why isn't the girl being punished too? The girls where being wild and reckless too and the girl in question was even drinking even before she met up with the defendent.

What I don't get is why is it in Georgia law that oral sex carries a harsher penalty than sexual intercourse. Like I said.. I'm not for promiscuity but I say the punishment should fit the "crime". The parents should punish the kids not the state... the parents should be doing their jobs in the first place.

Quoted from the article: “It all boils down to the fact that there’s the letter of the law and there’s the spirit of the law,” says Manigault, who claims that she still struggles to make peace with her role in the case and that she could not sleep for months after the verdict. “Under the letter of the law these young men were guilty, but under the spirit of the law they were not guilty,” she says. “Because we were ignorant we sent this child to jail.”"

Kind of makes me think of the Star Trek episode Justice where they go to a planet and on that planet everything is punished by death and Wesley Crusher was going to be sentenced to death for falling into some kind of covered garden thing.

And what's this? Quote: "At the time that Genarlow’s trial was underway, just down the hall in the same courthouse, Douglas County Judge Robert James Baker was hearing the case of Alexander High School English teacher and cheering coach Kari McCarley. The 27-year-old was found guilty of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old male student who attended the school where she worked. She was sentenced to three years probation and 90 days in jail."
