This is a great video to watch not only if you care one iota about the space program but also to enlighten a little if you don't understand why it's necessary. The space age was quite the era not only for the innovations it sparked but because of the dreaming it  inspired especially with science fiction. Without it we probably wouldn't have 2001: A space Odyssey, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.

It's unfortunate that without the carrot of a cold war and being afraid another nation would outdo us we as a nation don't care about space any more especially since it's not just about going to the moon or mars but the innovations that come from those endeavors benefit our every day lives... and just think.. half a penny out of every tax dollar is what goes to the space program and they want to take even that away.

My father is one of those "they should spend the money here on earth rather than in the stars" people and I think that's a rather myopic view to be honest. But it seems a lot of people that way and we have those kind of people in office. I wish more people where like Mr. Tyson.

I noticed this article for a few days but only just now got around to reading the comments. The story itself is funny but the comments make it even funnier. There was a man who is a part of the Jedi "religion" who got kicked out of a tesco supermarket for refusing to remove his Jedi robe hood.

To start off with the official response is very funny:

'He hasn't been banned. Jedis are very welcome to shop in our stores although we would ask them to remove their hoods.

'Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Luke Skywalker all appeared hoodless without ever going over to the Dark Side and we are only aware of the Emperor as one who never removed his hood.

'If Jedi walk around our stores with their hoods on, they'll miss lots of special offers.'

Funny thing is they are absolutely right! Most Jedi wore hoods for maybe under a combined time of half an hour out of the whole 6 movies. Luke wore his for all of two minutes practically.

These comments also amused me\made me laugh:

"Taking legal action against a chainstore for being "emotionally humiliated" does not sound like the Jedi way.
Aren't they supposed to control their emotions or be led down the path or the darkside?"

"Fluffernutter, biscuits... a Jedi craves not these things."

"How about Stormtroopers? Can they wear their suits into the grocery store? The helmets have eye amplicication stuff built in, so they won't miss any of the sales. Plus, they can communicate with each other, via their helmet comlinks, so they can alert fellow troopers to the awesome sales!"

Anyway at the end someone said, "humerously according to one source he wasn't wearing jedi robes but just a hoodie. If that's the case He may as well have lit up a joint and claimed to be a rastafarian, just sad really." I agree.

I also don't think I'll ever like anything enough to want to make it my religion. Especially not some fictional property such as Star Wars. Even if I did the prequels would be enough for me to lose my faith.

Someone else did make a good point though saying what if it was some other established religion that has funky head gear. But with only five years under the belt the "Jedi Religion" is basically a cult at this point if anything. I myself don't begrudge them doing what they want to do. But it needs to be tempered with reason in my opinion. OH and check the source material...

I was optimistic recently because I thought that best buy was calling me in a third time. This was even more so because the man who I talked to before said it's probably so I can go get a drug test. So I thought I was pretty much hired. Continued Inside.... )

I think I have the AppleTV squared away mostly. The previous flash drive I tried using to install software on it didn't work. However the one recommended by ATVFlash worked like a charm. It now has boxee (to access the internet video services other than youtube which comes built in). It has perian and flip4mac to access videos other than the quicktime\itunes approved ones. It can access network shares and any media files that are on them.

Right now I got about 50GB worth of movies\videos on my computer in a shared folder and it can see them all. I spent quite some time customizing how the folders\files display on the AppleTV... when you are going through the list it shows movie posters and for folders it shows PNG images of my choice. I did have some troubles at first of course with getting it to connect and then I had to change some settings to get some videos to play better but it works great now.

The only thing is I don't want to fill up my hard drive with just videos so I'm still planning on getting a network attached storage unit later which will make my video library independent of any computer. There's one that has 2TB and is about $320 that I have my eye on.

The USB support ATVFlash installs works good too.. and having keyboard makes entering searches a lot easier. I would like to get a wireless RF keyboard for the AppleTV to put on the coffee table. I found a mac specific one online that also has a trackpad that would be ideal for that.

I've even installed some emulators on the AppleTV.. basically it's a stripped down Mac running a special version of Tiger. The only emulator I haven't gotten to work yet though is the Nintendo 64 one. But I've hooked up a gamepad and played NES and SNES games already on there. They look better than they used to back in the day. The colors are much more pristine and clean. A wireless gamepad would be ideal for this.

What have I been up to lately? Well while I'm on my break I have been doing a lot of resting but I also have caught a couple of movies from netflix and I have started playing a multiplayer online game with a friend regularly.

The two movies I saw recently are 300 and AvP: Requiem. People are probably right that AvP: Requiem isn't a good movie but it is always nice to me to see a new story with those monsters in it. I really liked the spoiler ) that was in the movie.

300 was interesting. I think it may have been a little too racy to see with the folks but otherwise it was pretty good. I almost thought that King Leonidis was going to be hollering throughout the whole thing but there where times when he didn't yell. It was also pretty intersting seeing the actress who plays the new Sarah Connor in the terminator the sarah Connor chronicles TV show as the Queen in the movie.

The game a friend of mine and I are playing together lately is Star Trek Voyager Elite Force. I generally play as Captain Janeway and she plays as 7 of 9. We typically play as a team against another team of aliens. But there is this one mode I'd like to try soon called assimilation where it's your team against a bunch of borg. Those borg like in the show can adapt to your weapons and when they kill you you switch sides until either the humans win or the borg assimilates everyone. The borg are basically like zombies in that mode and they only have one weapon and move slower than regular bots\players.. I also downloaded a bunch TOS stuff for our use in the game. Basically we get our geek on with that game.

I thought of today how generally it seems a lot of people think as you get older you have to focus more on revolving your life around work, kids, etc. and become a boring person. More ranting inside... )
