This is just one of those stories that are too compelling not to post. There are two things I disagree with about this whole situation..... and it's mostly about the way people including the authorities reacted to it. This is how it seems it happened. Like they said the kid missed the bus and he wanted to go to school. He probably didn't want to bother his mom who was sleeping and figured it must be easy to drive maybe partially due to driving in video games but that's not a scape goat here.

He drove a few miles and then crashed into a utility pole. Then he got out and continued walking to school. This much determination to get to school tells me he wasn't out for a joyride. I admire his tenacity in getting to school I find it hard to believe most kids can be that way most would have taken that opportunity to skip school. So here are the two things I disagree with:

A) He should be beaten (comments on the youtube video): I don't know about this. Maybe if he doesn't understand what he did and it's the only way to get through to him but that would be tragic. He may have learned his lesson already by crashing and getting a bump on his head. The latter seems likely because of his tenacity in getting to school. He could have tried to go anywhere. Plus if they beat him for that he may not want to drive a car ever again.

B) The parents being charged: I understand the states decision on this but how was the mom supposed to know he'd get the keys and attempt to drive? Do all parents have to lock away their keys in fear that their children will try to drive themselves to school? I think it's a little unreasonable for them to intervene and interfere with this situation.

I realize I haven't updated in a few weeks at least. Here is one thing that kept me occupied during this time:

Apple TV: This is the biggest distraction I have had lately. I got the patcstick to install the extra software to enable it to install support for things such as divx files and to watch streaming internet videos other than the built in youtube. Those where perian, flip4mac, boxee, etc. all the standard Mac versions you'd install on a typical Mac. Same thing with installing web browsers (I use Camino on the AppleTV).

A light switch came on. If I can use those applications on there what else can I use? The Apple TV doesn't come with a standard file managing finder (it instead has the front row interface replacing the finder). But since I can run standard Mac applications I found a file manager that works on there. It's called Disk Order 3.0. It's a dual pane file manager that also has tabs. It works great on the Apple TV and I can actually manage files on there without having to run downstairs and FTP into it from my Mac Mini.

I've got iTerm installed for my terminal access needs... I was SSH'ing into it from my Mac downstairs but why not have a terminal that I can acess actually on it? I've got pacifist installed since it doesn't seem to be able to open pkg files on its own. There's no command+tab or dock or even expose on the Apple TV so I installed the third party task switcher "witch" which allows you to option+tab through all open windows.

Anything else you got working you may ask? Games.... yes.. games.. the Apple TV is basically an intel mac running a stripped down Tiger with a Pentium M CPU and a GeForce 7 series card. This video card kicks the video card in my Mac's butt being able to run games at 1280x720 resolution with a higher average framerate.

I have actually installed and ran a few games (and beat them too) on it. All the id tech 4 engine games (Prey, Quake 4 and Doom 3) ran on it and surprisingly well. I also got Quake 1, 2, Open Arena, eDuke32, Nevermore and NES and SNES emulation running on it. None of Aspyrs id Tech 3 engine games (like Jedi Knight II and Alice) work on it and even though I could get Open Arena (which is based on id Tech 3 in the form of ioquake 3) running I couldn't get standard ioquake 3 + baseQ3 running. Many other games including all of feral's games would not run. But I'm surprised I was able to make any games run at all. I happen to like those id tech 4 games a lot. UT engine games didn't work... and there's no rosetta so no older powerpc only games.

The one achilles heel that I know I can fix though is the Apple TV came with an anemic hard drive. It came with a 4200rpm hard drive with 2MB cache. This causes pauses in even the non demanding games and general heavy disk activity (but I guess it's OK for videos\music =P). But I got a faster bigger drive on order that I plan on transferring the system to and all my files when it comes in and installing it into the Apple TV.

Some interesting things in most of the id tech 4 engine cames it renders them internally at 720p but displays them at 1080i. I don't know why it does that and why one of the games Quake 4 doesn't do that (it renders internally and displays it at 720p). I read it does the former if you pick 1080i when displaying the OS and videos in general though. Perhaps Prey and Doom 3 trigger that function... who knows.

Speaking of 1080i the card I have isn't fast enough to pump the pixels at 1920x1080 but I did notice that when I actually set the game to render at that resolution there is a noticeable difference between that being displayed at 1080i and 1280x720 upscaled to 1080i. A lot of people say there isn't much a difference between those two resolutions but I can comfortably say I disagree now. This is especially true when you are sitting closer to the screen as I do when I play games.

The Apple TV is actually a pretty nice very cheap Mac but it isn't as good as the new Macs. If they make a new one I'd have them at least double the RAM (it has 256MB) and double the VRAM (it has 64MB) and perhaps put in a dual core CPU so it can play 1080p videos (and as a nice side effect for hackers like me we could do more with it ;)). Oh and stop using anemic hard drives. =P

But Apple did say the Apple TV is just a side hobby so I don't know if they will.

And no this hasn't changed my plans on getting a new mac. That'll be a hell of a lot better than this.

Is it just me or do they make everything look so easy in movies? What am I asking? They do make everything look so easy! For example... they often show the hardest part of getting into school is getting accepted but once you are it's so easy for people to just up and go. This past year or last I was accepted into Dave School in Florida but I don't know how or when I will be able to relocate to Florida and where I would live when I'm there and how I would make things work.

I already owe a lot of money to student loans and my credit isn't so good. I almost feel like my only hopes are for either someone rich to believe in me and decide to fund me going there or I get picked for a show where they help someone's dreams come true. If I was in a movie I'd probably already be in my cool career having completed that training. Another thing that would work is if I had a friend in Florida who was willing to put me up and help me find someplace to work. But I would still need money for tuition.

Is there anyone with any advice for me? If you are reading this and you aren't on my friends list you may e-mail me at smoketetsu at wildblue dot net

I just read an interesting article about a woman who was "married" to the berlin wall for 29 years. She has a condition called "Objectum-Sexuality"(sounds like a naughty Harry Potter spell)... she thinks the Berlin wall was "sexy" and she thought the great wall of china was attractive but the great wall was better. Now she's attracted to a nearby garden fence. I can't imagine loving any inanimate object that much. Even with my computers.. I may like them but they are just an appliance.. I don't have any sexual or romantic feelings for them. I may think my mac mini is cute.. I may describe a certain thing as "sexy" but that's just a metaphor. Only other people (of the human female persuasion) are truly sexy to me. I would never marry an inanimate object. Well, at least with her fixation she wont have to worry about someone else hitting on her love interest.. oh wait.. they did (fall of the berlin wall). Bad Joke? @_@ Maybe! I don't see what she saw in that wall anyway.. I mean it was all graffitied and ugly... does the garden fence have graffiti? Are those like... tattoos to her? Are nails piercings? The mind boggles. There's also this guy who has sex with cars. Well, quite a lot of people do think cars are "sexy" but uh.. o_O;

This article says that particularly in Florida teens hold beliefs such as:

  • Drinking a capfull of bleach will prevent HIV.
  • Drinking Mountain Dew or smoking pot will prevent pregnancy

I wonder what the complete list of beliefs they have are. Is "if the girl is on top she wont get pregnant because it's just physics" in that list? I actually think they are more like excuses than beliefs but some of them are just plain destructive. I think it's good that they are wanting to educate them more but in the end they're going to do what they want.

I also don't think for some kids that sex education in school helps that much. It didn't help prevent all the teen pregnancies that happen and continue to happen in my state. I don't think it helps that some parents rely on public schools to teach their kids about sex. I don't think my family has ever felt comfortable talking about it.

I might agree that a lot of the time the basis for people hating homosexual, (aka gay) people is religion. However I don't think that saying all heterosexual, (aka straight) people hate them is a good generalization to make. I do think it's unfortunate that other people single out others because of their sexuality. But the ones who are flamboyant about it kind of make it a bit hard. But that kind of hate is very superficial and it can be directed against people who aren't gay but people think they are because of certain superficial things. I kind of don't agree though with the sweeping generization of, "You say you don't hate us, but you voted for people who do so you hate us". This person makes a lot of condemnation but doesn't offer much in the way of suggestions on what people can do to help.

However within reason I don't think anyone should be denied expressing themselves for who they are. For example, if straight people are allowed to walk down the street hand in hand or give each other a quick peck I don't see why gay people shouldn't be allowed to also. But I don't think that either sexuality should be french kissing and groping each other in public... there is a time and a place for that.

I also don't think they should be required to "keep it private" because like above there is certain things that people do that they don't think anything of and everyone should feel free to do it. Some person here wrote that someone they knew came out of the closet and their family rejected them for it. The person said.. "if only they had kept it private that wouldn't have happened". How are they supposed to "keep it private" from their families forever though for example? Let's say the person got into a relationship. Are they to put up a charade every time their family come over and hide everything and anything that can reveal that they are more than just friends\room mates?

Is it just me or does making specific gay or whatever type of person (like Black) channels on TV encouraging people singling them out? I think making channels based on Genre is ok but based on race or sexuality? I wouldn't watch a show simply because it has a person of a certain race in it or a certain sexuality. Sure it may be cool for someone to see a channel that has a lot of their fellow insert group here but I'm not sure it helps especially if they show mostly stereotypical characters.
